The tough terrain in and around Baja’s San Felipe makes it one of the most brutal courses in SCORE’s four races. Racers agree that the most challenging part of this race is that you are driving/riding at nearly ninety percent of your vehicle’s capabilities. Mike Cafro was optimistic at the start of the 2022 SCORE season, thinking he could bring home a championship in the Pro UTV Open Class after previously running in the Pro Stock UTV Class and winning every race in 2021. Plans for campaigning a new and faster Polaris RZR Pro R, however, were delayed because of the availability of the vehicle itself, as well as the parts and time needed for the racing modifications. Instead, he ended up running his old car for most of the season. Despite being at a disadvantage to the other cars in the Open Class in those early races, he and co-driver Jamie Kirkpatrick managed to finish at or near the top in the first three. Read More
For SCORE’s Pro UTV racers, the course before Hurricane Kay hit the area was much different than it was on race day. While the rain had stopped about a week before the start of the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels, sections had been washed out or became muddy. Moto and Quad classes simply went around certain muddy areas, and the SCORE Trophy Trucks and Buggies simply had enough power and tire to blast right through them. Mike Cafro and co-driver Jamie Kirkpatrick shared the time behind the wheel of their Polaris RZR to bring home a win in the Pro UTV Open Class in this year’s SCORE Baja 400, after second-place finishes in both the SCORE San Felipe 250 and the SCORE Baja 500. Cafro’s win keeps him in the class points lead for the season so far, with hopes for capturing the championship with the upcoming 55th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts. Wayne Matlock's shockingly fast six-hour and eight-minute finish in Pro UTV Open, led the way for other racers to also finish faster than before. Mike Cafro in the No, 1876 Polaris RZR Turbo S, is one of several racers who moved into the Open class this season, after receiving the 2021 Pro UTV Stock Championship.
